The Casebearer 1.0

Dave Greber + Cristina Molina’s videos for A Structure Envisioned for Changing Circumstances take inspiration from the highly adaptive species commonly known as the Bagworm or CaseBearer who creates a cocoon home for itself from whatever debris it finds. As artists who live in New Orleans, a city that faces coastal erosion and is threatened by sea level rise, the Bagworm serves as a model example of a resourceful nomad that acclimates itself to any given situation.

To make this video series, the artists co-authored a poem from the perspective of the Bagworm. Using artificial intelligence to generate voice, imagery, and sound--each artist’s rendering of the Bagworm exists as a stuttering enigmatic sage that muses over its own lifecycle, from birth to transcendence.

Cristina Molina wears a costume by designer Christine Crook (@christineandthecrook). “DEBRIS” is a mosaiced mask & mantle, and rust dyed cape. These pieces were created using a variety of materials including dehydrated china-berries, unidentified nut husks, and rusted metal. These materials were gathered in New Orleans amidst the vast debris following Hurricane Ida.

Christine Crooks’s work channels a supernatural spirit, and uses the atavistic instinct of "costume" as an ancient ritual of wildness.  She is inspired by traditions in folk art, the occult, ceremonial masquerade, and contemporary pop culture. Christine strives to allow the costume to exist on its own as a magical sculpture distorting and transforming the body of the wearer. She works viscerally and embraces randomness while creating, which results in an assemblage of exaggerated forms fused with emotion and a wild camp aesthetic. More info at: http://christinecrook.squarespace.com/

Dave minted a series of 5 still renders from the Casebearer universe available on the Tezos blockchain. They sold out on the primary market, and at the moment, none are available on the secondary.
